I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it.

Hello again! This is (not so) conflicted, from a few days ago. I just wanted to thank you for directing me to The Daily Plate! I've only been using it for two full days, but it's already become an invaluable resource. It's really helping me keep track of the nutrition I'm getting. I'm able to keep track of calories easily enough myself, but I had been angsting over how I was going to keep track of how much fat, sugar, fiber, carbs, etc. I was eating. The Daily Plate solves my problem quite handily. I now know that I am eating WAY too much sugar. Curse you, dried fruit! Once I nom my way through that stuff (I refuse to throw out perfectlyy good, expensive food), I'll be able to to cut my sugar intake and hopefully burn off some of this extra fat that's been bothering e. Thank again! (And I apologize for any spelling mistakes, I can't see what I'm typing because that ask box is so small.)

NO PROBLEM! Glad the site is working out so well :)

CHOICES

Everyday we make choices. The thing is you have the power to choose to have a good day, a bad day, a productive day, to give up or forge ahead, to smile, to cry, and so on.

You can only control the controllable…let the rest go, move forward and don’t let what is completely out of your control determine the outcome of your day.

Choose to smile at every person that passes you, choose to work out even though you may not feel motivated, choose to drink water all day and cut out soda, choose the apple over the danish. No one forces you into making choices one way or the other-you control your choices.

No more excuses-make good choices!

I am currently a freshman in college, I'm 5'6" and I weigh about 140, most being muscle mass. But I do have 2 problem areas that really bother me that I can't get rid of. When I look at my legs in the mirror, they are great right until I hit the upper inner thigh area, and then my love handles/back fat. I have great abs from when I was in highschool and obsessed but I don't think I've worn a tight fitting shirt since because I feel unproportional being skinny but then having massive love handles that show. I eat healthy pretty much, and I have access to a gym, I just don't know where to start and what exercises to do?

you sound like a pretty in-shape person you just have an extra 5-10lb fat area which is very common. Where you are storing this excess baggage comes down to nutrition. I mean completely on-par, no nonsense cheating etc. In order to truly not have love-handles and in the inner thigh fat your nutrition needs to be perfect!

every day 5-9 servings of fruits and veggies, NO SIMPLE CARBOHYDRATES, all complex carbs, and protein. I know, I know its not what anyone wants to hear but that is the honest truth. Love handles will always be there unless nutrition is perfect!

I'm a bit conflicted. I have two fitness goals at the moment. One is to reduce the fat/cellulite around my butt/thighs. It's weighing me down, and tight jeans and workout pants look horrible on me. My other goal is to build muscle on my upper body, because even if I slim down on the bottom, I'm still pear shaped by nature. Problem is, these two goals conflict. One would require me to eat a deficit to lose weight, one would require me to eat a surplus and gain weight. My question to you - is there any way I can do both at the same time? If not, which should I prioritize? Thanks in advance.

AH HA! Your goals do not conflict my dear! They completely correspond :)

let’s first discuss: Butt/thigh toning/shaping/weight loss. When women gain weight, most of us store that excess fat on our lower mid-section, butt and thighs and we appear more pear-shaped. Men, however, gain weight on the upper half of their body and in the front of their mid-section appearing more apple-shaped.

In order for you to lose the cellulite, look more toned in the lower half of your body, and increase your upper-body strength you should hit the weights!!! It’s a common misconception about the amount of leg strength that is present in females that have the toned non-cellulite legs. To give you an example:

I am 5’2” 125lbs I have a little bit of cellulite on my legs (believe it or not) I can lunge in all directions with two 20lb dumbbells (aka 40lbs total) I can also squat more than half my body weight. So, for anyone out there playing it safe with the 5-pounders it’s time for you go heavy!! Same can be said for your upper-body strength: NO MORE LADY PUSH-UPS! Even if you start out barely doing one push-up from your toes, take a break in between and work your way up :)

Now, calories: you do not need to increase your caloric intake to build muscle unless you want to be a 1st place woman body builder or plan on playing offensive tackle for your local football team. Go to thedailyplate.com and follow the steps to calculate what your daily calories should be. Do your best to stay within that range, watch your ratios of carbs:fats:proteins this in combination with strength training 3x+ per week will result in decreased cellulite on the legs/butt/thighs AND upper-body strength gains!

Hi! I recently lost 50lbs. What can I do about the saggy skin that I now have on my stomach, arms, legs, etc? What can I do to make my breasts perky, if that's possible? And what can I do about the stretch marks? They're embarrassing with them being on my stomach and arms.

Thanks much. Hope you're having a fun with your new job.

THANKS SO MUCH! Sorry for taking so long to get back to everyone :( First congrats on the weight loss!

Try reading this article for some insight: http://health.msn.com/fitness/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100165487

It sounds like you lost the weight pretty rapidly, if you have the saggy skin and stretch marks. My suggestion would be to take a more direct approach with weight training and make cardio a 2x/wk MAX! It’s time to tone and let your skin catch up to your weight loss. Make strength gains and nutrition your main focus: fruits, veggies, protein, new recipes :) have fun with it!

Also, I would suggest pure cocoa butter (not drug store brand, ones you find at trader joes, whole foods, other specialty lotion stores) there is some evidence pure cocoa butter and vitamin E and aloe can reduce the appearance of stretch marks over time. GOOD LUCK!
